We have officially survived week one in Uganda (hip hip, horray!) Our house is becoming more functional every day (particularly the kitchen – we even made our own tortilla chips and I made apple crumble today) and we have picked up some tips and tricks to making life easy. E.g. ant poison on the edge of the counter really works, and we discovered a washing machine in the other house on our property that we can use! We have been enjoying Coke from glass bottles and chapattis from the side of the road, as well as the many different sounds of birds, crickets and who-knows-what-else in the trees outside. (Did we mention that the rooster is not among those sounds anymore?! Just saying).
Paul has officially started working at the Timothy Centre. Yesterday Jeff gave him a list of things to start working on, such as designing the layout of the guesthouse kitchens and bathrooms, deciding on the locations of plugs and light switches, and basically helping the guys that are already working on site. There is a lot to do in order to get these guesthouses done by mid-September, which is when the first team is coming to stay in them. After they are gone, we will be moving into one of the houses, which we are really excited about. The property is beautiful!
I have also started doing some “work” for Kibaale. Arleen gave me a stack of lesson plans that are handwritten in Luganda to type out onto the computer so that they can have them on file. This will keep me busy for the next little while for sure!
We have been introduced to a couple restaurants in Masaka that are really good – and cheap! One of them offers free wireless internet, which is where we are right now, having dinner!
A few random tidbits:
- storks are ugly
- we live next to a cemetery
- we live on Jonmohamed Rd.
- the washing machine takes 1 million hours to complete a cycle
- we found a step class at a Danish restaurant on Mon/Wed nights which I am going to try next week!
