Last Sunday morning we headed up to Kampala with Rachel for our first “tour” and learning our way around the big city. Paul drove, I navigated with the map, and Rachel pointed out all the important places we will need to know how to find (grocery stores, malls, restaurants and guesthouses!) We enjoyed grocery shopping to the tunes of “How Great Thou Art” and “Oh the Wonderful Cross” (that would never happen at home!) There really is a lot available in Kampala – who knew we would find sweet chili sauce and Kit Kat bars?! Even a movie theatre (yes, we watched a movie…Ice Age 3). We stayed the night at Adonai guesthouse, and on Monday morning we met up with Jeff, and blitzed around on the biggest, fastest shopping order ever: 7 toilets, 7 showers, 7 sinks, and enough floor and bathroom tiles to tile 7 guesthouses. All for the Timothy Centre. This week we chose all the paint colours, and we will eventually scout out the finishing touches (ie. lamps, furniture, etc.). This may require switching careers in the near future from teacher/carpenter to interior designers. You never know!
Paul had a busy week last week at the Timothy Centre as the building is progressing, and he’s now getting into the swing of handling the money for supplies as the builders need them. The buildings are looking good, and sometime soon they will being tiling and painting the first duplex. Paul is also quickly discovering that things here are done differently than at home, and he is adjusting to doing things in new and interesting ways! (Patience and flexibility are great assets here! "Two things that I am currently lacking" says Paul).
On Saturday, less than a week after our first trip to Kampala, we ventured there again. This time we were in a big truck with a driver to go pick up all the supplies we ordered last week. It was a full-day experience that took much longer than we expected! And this time, since our driver didn’t know his way around, we had to navigate. Thankfully Rachel did a good job showing us around the first time and we were able to find the mall (that was my stop) and the supply store. And of course, because we’re in Uganda, nothing was ready from our order to be loaded up, so after a lot of waiting around, loading up, tying things in, and coming back to pick me up, it was much later than we expected by the time we left Kampala! (A half hour loading job took 2.5 hours). Now all those tiles and toilets and showers and sinks that we picked up are “decorating” our living room and garage for the next little while!
We are approaching the end of week 3 (3 down, 50 to go!)
