On Saturday we had the priviledge of attending our first Ugandan wedding! One of the TC workers, Peter, tied the knot with his bride, Angela. We had been told plenty of stories of what to expect going to a wedding (that it would start late, go long, and be impossible to understand) and it pretty much lived up to those expectations. And more. The wedding was scheduled to start at 12pm, so we showed up at 12:30pm and weren't surprised to find that it hadn't started yet. In fact, there was another wedding going on inside the church, which thankfully was over by 1:00 so that this wedding only started an hour late. (Considering our friends told us one wedding they went to started 7 hours late, we thought this was pretty good!) The catch, however, was that there were 2 other weddings scheduled to happen at the exact same time as Peter's wedding. Apparently it's not uncommon to have joint wedding ceremonies because it's cheaper. So, lucky us, we got to see not one, not two, but three couples walk down the aisle and say their vows! Let's just say that by the time the ceremony was over at 4pm (yes that's right, 3 hours long, not a word of English) we weren't quite as enthusiastic as we had been earlier in the day.
Obviously if the ceremony ended at 4 and the reception was scheduled to start at 3, that didn't happen. We knew the bridal party photos would take awhile so we showed up at the reception at 5pm, which was perfect timing as it was just about to begin. It was a pretty "flashy" party to say the least.
And Paul had to give a speech, which everyone loved. One of the groom's relatives even came up to him afterwards and asked him for a copy of the speech.
